I have been teaching my 13-year-old granddaughter how to drive a Jeep with a standard transmission. I bought a sweet 2000 Jeep Sahara for the task. We have had 2 parking lot lessons and she has caught on quickly. She can easily start on flat ground from a dead stop, move through the gears up to third, and then back down to first and then to a full stop. She is now ready for a back-road lesson.
There was an article in today's Wall Street Journal about renewed interest in manual transmission cars. Most of the interest is in the 18-40 age group. The interest is very similar to young folks' interest in vinyl instead of digital music.
